In this full length novel, Pinkley is hired to find the missing Professor Brown. As he investigates he finds that the case isn’t what he thought it was, and no one is who they seem to be.
The longer story is bit more enjoyable than the short stories in that there is plenty of room for more zany characters. I swear there is not a single normal person to be found anywhere in Whitby, but they are all fun to read. Pinkley is lovable in his teenage homage to the Mike Hammer narrations and the show more ending is pure cliche fun. Teen and pre-teen mystery buffs will definitely enjoy it. show less

This is a great start to a series, and I hope the sequels will soon available, because I'd love to know how the story goes on! True, this is completed, but there is potential for at least one sequel.
It's a wonderful YA story, with magic, and children and youths who are different from what is generally accepted as 'normal'.
The idea is great, and I was hooked from the first to the last sentence -- and I'm way past the YA age!
I imagine this could be a great hit with boys and girls: there's show more young people who don't belong, who have to hide their special gifts, and suddenly, they realize that they are not alone, that there are others just like them, and that their various skills are useful -- even needed--to protect the society that doesn't want them.
Martin Hillier did a fantastic job narrating the story, he's certainly a narrator to look out for.
The story is fast paced (and much too short, I could have gone on listening), yet there's some character development, at the end of the book you have a clear idea of who is who and what the protagonists' strengths and weaknesses are.
I really hope there'll be sequels.

Another great short story/activity book in which our hapless detective hasn’t got a clue. He and his dog buddy Gregory track a gang costume bedecked thieves to a local old folks home, but did he follow the clues correctly? Loads of fun for junior detectives
Investigative Fun
Beautiful illustrations and a descriptive turn of phrase will put middle grade Jr detectives right in the action. Lawrence Pinkley makes for fun protagonist to lead the way through puzzles that will keep even the most reluctant of readers engaged. Though available as a e book, the paperback version of this book is my recommendation for the fun activities in the back pages with a website tie-in.
