This book is so much more than the body horror I was expecting. It is beautiful and melancholic. It's a commentary on themes of human experience: connection, family, relationships, on how we relate to each other and how those ways can be stifling and abusive, and what it means to live through those experiences (to an extent) from both sides.

Anyone who has experienced relationship like what is depicted in this novel will find constant echoes of themselves in this story. And anyone who is show more been lucky enough to not may find a way of understanding a bit more those people in their life that have.

"If their stories are really all that similar, then he probably understands how much it hurts, having to wrap your brain around impossible traumas all the time. He remembers everything - ... But only in a sterile, theoretical sense of memory... He cannot hold the shape of it in his conscious mind. What is there in his past is not something to be discussed with others, not because they wouldn't believe it, but because he doesn't think that they could understand it... He may not be able to run from his past, but he can shift it into a part of his mind where it is more like a movie he saw years ago then something he personally experienced." show less
