Short and sweet. Many "man at war" first-hand accounts try to wrap up the experience with some kind of closure either mental or physical - I think it helps that this book was written in 1943 in the middle of the author's service and therefore doesn't include any attempt to provide a bow on the experience. Can't decide whether I wanted an introduction or epilogue by the author at one of the reprint points (my copy is from 1988). Perhaps it's better read without the clarity of retrospection.
