In this thoughtfully written book, Chigor introduces four men who were enslaved in the British Empire. From their writings he compares and contrasts their views on their enslavement, on Christianity, and the relationship between the two. By doing this he lays to rest any myth of a monolithic "African" response to slavery. He also demonstrates the key part that Africans had in the abolitionist movement, and the depth of variations in the motivations for this involvement.
