Short biography: Fausta Cialente was born into an artistic Italian family. Her brother Renato grew up to be a famous actor and novelist. The family moved often due to her father's military career. In 1921, she married Enrico Terni, a composer, and lived with him in Alexandria, Egypt, among the expatriate community; it became the setting for her earliest novels. During World War II, she worked for the British government, edited an anti-fascist journal, and made daily broadcasts on Radio Cairo. After her husband's death in 1947, she returned to Italy, where she wrote journalism for some time as well as several screenplays. She also translated works by Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Lawrence Durrell, and Henry James into Italian. She returned to fiction after 25 years and won numerous prestigious awards for her novels. Near the end of her life, she moved to England to be closer to her daughter.

Le quattro ragazze Wieselberger by Fausta Cialente

rieste, tra la fine dell'Ottocento e gli inizi del secolo successivo. In casa Wieselberger nascono quattro figlie femmine. Le prime tre, Alice, Alba e Adele, tutte con la “a” come iniziale del nome, anche se nessuno ne ha mai spiegato il motivo, l’ultima, Elsa, deve invece il nome all’eroina dell’opera romantica Lohengrin di Richard Wagner, alla cui prima il signor Wieselberger, maestro di musica, rimase letteralmente folgorato. Una famiglia benestante, la loro, anche se, nata show more Elsa, il padre dichiara: “Quattro figlie! Non possiamo abituarle con cocchiere e cavalli che aspettano al portone!”. Più un fatto educativo che di reale necessità, perché lo status della famiglia non lascia spazio ai dubbi: una casa a Trieste (città che ancora non fa parte dell’Italia) e una villa in campagna per l’estate, entrambe arredate di tutto punto e ricolme di ogni ben di Dio, con personale di servizio fisso che comprende addirittura una sarta per i vestiti e i corredi delle ragazze e che si occupa anche degli acquisti di pizzi, nastri, fodere e bottoni. Delle quattro signorine Wieselberger, Alba è un po’ scorbutica (resterà zitella), mentre Adele oltre a essere bellissima, conquista tutti per i modi, tanto che la sua morte prematura, a 27 anni, lascia nello sconforto più totale non solo la famiglia.
