I added this to my to-read list (after seeing Neil Gaiman mention it on bsky) expecting something sobering and likely depressing/distressing.
I have few illusions about the gig economy, though I've never been personally involved in it, but this. . . If I had, Jonathan Rigsby would have done his best to remove them. He also endeavoured frequently to make it clear that if his situation was at all unusual, it was in the privileges and benefits he did have, even while scraping at the margins of show more life and barely surviving.
I learned a number of should be (if not truly, for the most part) shocking things, and there is an exhaustive list of references cited for numbers, statistics, and many of those shocking facts.
While I've generally seen this noted as funny, 'darkly humorous', or similar, personally I did not find much if anything within to be amusing. Certainly, however, there were interesting and/or touching stories, both the author's own and those of some of the passengers he relates. show less
