Butter, Sugar, Magic: Baking Up a Magical Midlife, Book 1 (Baking Up a Magical Midlife, Paranormal Women's Fiction Series) by Jessica Rosenberg
Books with a mystery component aren’t something I’m drawn to often, so admittedly it wasn’t my favorite choice that a fair bit of the focus here is on finding out who stole the family grimoire, there are other aspects of the plot I would have rather seen explored further, but that’s totally just a personal preference issue, and that said, there were moments of searching for the grimoire that I did really enjoy, like a cute bit involving a mouse, and the way the mystery was solved was show more fun, too.
I wouldn’t have minded a bit more time spent on the day to day running of the bakery Cassie inherits, but what I most wanted more of here was the relationship between mother and daughter, and since eleven year old Aurie is arguably going through as much change as her mom, I would have welcomed her POV sprinkled in here and there, too. Again though, that’s a personal preference thing, I know there are plenty of readers (maybe even the majority) who prefer kids playing a minor role in adult books so for them Aurie’s likely featured just the right amount.
While this one is set in the summer, it still works nicely if you’re like I am and seem to always find yourself craving some cozy witchiness in Autumn, there’s plenty to like here, from the animals to magic infused baking and women (for the most part) supporting one another. show less
