This new edition is an absolutely first rate textbook, full of judicious conclusions, knowledgeable and generalizations, and skillful characterizations. It is both informed concerning French historiography and as up-to-date as a printed book can be. Anyone teaching French history on the collegiate level will have to give it serious consideration
