An examination of the problems enlisted women faced in the early AVF, when the services accepted increased numbers of women recruits only because they were more qualified than the remaining male volunteers in the AVF. Author believes that male skeptism and hostility led to a high turnover rate which hurt women's ability to develop a supportive female culture, mentors and role models.
