Short biography
Jan lives down the end of the road on a lake and has a passion for the Canadian wilderness. A storyteller as well as a writer, she has given readings and workshops, and performed at festivals across the country. As a storyteller, she has a particular love for the traditional folk and fairy tales and this love is creeping into her writing. A past National Coordinator of Storytellers of Canada/Conteurs du Canada, she is convinced that storytelling is for all ages. She produces a winter series of tellings from the world's great epics and has organized weekend performances of such works as The Odyssey -- in its entirety -- at her home. Her writing comes out of a conviction that young people can find within themselves all they need to manage in their lives. She writes about the times of struggle and darkness but also about finding the way through the darkness to change and hope. Her main focus has been on picture books -- not necessarily for very young readers -- but she plans on increasing the number of her works for young adults in years to come. An avid rock climber, Jan has done the research for exhibitions, programmed festivals and written for the government. She is co-founder of the Eastern Ontario arts education organization MASC: Artists in Schools and Communities.

A wonderfully fresh collection of folktales from around the world, all dusted off and told with verve and grace. The source notes might encourage children to go back to the originals, but even if they don't these stand alone just fine. Some are less familiar to me even though I read in this genre extensively, so that's special. Great for families to read together.

I also think it would be great fun to use this as a mentor text for age 12 up: have the students each take an old tale from Andrew show more Lang or another old 'tales of many lands' collection and rewrite it in Andrews' style (or in their own style if they're ready for that). For example I love how she has updated the 'once upon a time' motif and writers could def. have fun with that.

So, yes, recommended for casual fun and for any educational setting (home, public school, univ.).

If you can't get this, or want more, I also highly recommend [a:Margaret Read MacDonald|302049|Margaret Read MacDonald|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1266510730p2/302049.jpg] and [a:Eric A. Kimmel|2602|Eric A. Kimmel|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1507394162p2/2602.jpg].

Reads as if mythopoeic, also as if #ownvoices. I trust the history, the details revealed in the art of clothing, tools, housing, etc, and also of the biology of the tidal sea cave and the art of the ancestors. Too bad there's no note, but I still believe this is worthy of status as a classic, and of reprints to keep it in libraries.

Especially good for educators, of course, and not just of 'exotic cultures.' Really good example of strong (but not spunky or kick-ass) women, authentically show more holding to traditions to nourish their bodies and spirits. show less
Hurt and angry that his grandfather is selling the family farm, Todd has come to help him prepare for the auction that will take place the following day. Deep into the night, Gramps recounts the treasured stories of his life there, stories Todd knows by heart but asks to hear again and again. In this way, both are reassured that the story-making and -telling that characterized this vanishing life will continue to flourish, despite the farm's change of hands.
Oh, nicely done. I wish there were more stories, and I wish that even more of the flavor of Canada came through, but honestly I'm just being greedy because I enjoyed so much what was included. Stories gracefully told, illustrations fitting and fun. Introduction and source note included.
