When I bought this book, it resided in the graphic novel section of the store. Not sure I would call this a graphic novel. It's more of a regular novel with a lot of artwork.

I really liked most of this book. The illustrations were beautiful and the different adventures the Armbrusters had along with the people they mets personal stories kept me very interested but for whatever reason, the disappearance of Caleb for no apparent reason at the end totally ruined it for me. Because of the show more disappearance it felt unfinished to me and kind of ruined the experience of reading it. I'm still trying to decide whether or not I'm going to keep it or give it away. show less
This is Dame Darcy at her best! Plenty of artwork to satisfy her graphic fans, and the tales and advice are hilarious and thought provoking. One doesn't need to be a witch, or even to believe in magic, for this to be a book worth reading. There are recipes for candles, soap, and make up, horoscope information, and little bits of history as well.
I really did not enjoy this book. Other than having to suspend disbelief at a lot of things the people in this post-apocalyptic culture enjoy (like batteries and kerosene lamps), I found the plot to be sort of circular. They have a car because they need it to get more gasoline so they can keep driving their car to get more gasoline, and so on. Also, there's something that just rubbed me wrong about the characters and their antics. It's not that they weren't believable, it's just that I found show more them to be sort of one-dimensional. I also thought the dialogue was rather shallow.

This book isn't really like a graphic novel as you would expect, but a picture book. I did enjoy the huge full-color illustrations and the really nice, thick paper. Too bad the story inside didn't live up to the format!
