Abstract

This project was meant to create a full first-year curriculum for the high school
beginning orchestra student. This curriculum is meant to be used with students who
had little to no experience with music learning before reaching ninth grade. Many
existing curricula focus only on the early to late elementary school level and are meant
to be used for children from ages eight through twelve. Due to the intended age range,
many curricula move much more slowly than what is needed for the show more average high
school student. Many also use music that is not appealing to the average high school
student, which makes it difficult to motivate older students to learn the material. By
creating a curriculum for high school orchestra beginners, this project is meant to fill a
void in the existing orchestra curriculum material. The author hopes that it will be
