I wasn't super excited about a Guitar Special Edition but it turned out that there is loads of fascinating stuff in here. I enjoyed learning about John Russell, was surprised to learn stuff about Hendrix that I didnt already know, and whilst I couldn't be persuaded to care about Randy California and Spirit, NoC's enthusiasm and knowledge of the subject was charming! Chris Whitehead's notes on Guitar Drag also introduced me to that terrifying and depressing piece of art. Simon Hickinbotham's show more piece on 20th Century Guitarists made me interested in a load of people who I knew about but wasn't interested about before. On the downside Greg Nieuwsma implies that Tinariawen came to prominance in 2010, which came as a surprise to me because I saw them at Glastonbury in the mid-00s. An interview with Charlotte Law breaks up the sausage fest a bit and is probably the most interesting artist in the zine, I'd definitely go see her work. Ash Cooke and detuning is also way more interesting than I expected, not being a musician. Another fine zine from the TQ team. show less
I enjoyed this zine a lot, TQ has been a great discovery for me. Its given me a whole list of new music to listen to, and also some thoughtful pieces by Paul PMZ on his complete failure to run a record label and Sheer Zed on how it is to be a full-time carer for a vulnerable person during lockdown.
OK zine this time.Interviews with Anatomy of the Heads, Phil Tyler, and Brad Rose were all especially interesting. There are a fair few things to look up and learn about that I took from this, which is always a sign of a decent read!
Dead interesting, I liked the round table and the interview with one of the organisers of Newcastle New Jazz and Experimental Music festival. Must go to that sometime. Newcastle is the place to be for experimental music in the UK. Oh yeah, Chris Whitehead's cartoon about free improv was fantastic.
