In the year 1919 Hale Ascher VanderCook (1864-1949)
founded VanderCook Cornet School where he trained musical
performers, teachers, and directors. To facilitate his
instruction of brass technique and musical expression, H.A.
VanderCook composed a series of brass solos. While
VanderCook's primary instrument was the cornet, he wrote
his solos to be played on any of the brass instruments.
One of Mr. VanderCook's earliest solo collections,
Compositions for Cornet or Trombone and Piano from the
Teaching show more Repertoire of H. A. VanderCook, was published in
1911. These solos were mostly polkas of moderate
difficulty and helped to teach players musical expression.
The titles of these solos were names of flowers such as
Chrysanthemum, Marigold, and Magnolia.
