- Mr. Daily was born in Trenton and attended Hamilton High School before leaving to join the Navy. He served for four years and then earned his GED and graduated from Trenton Junior College. He won a scholarship to the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, and in 1968 received a bachelor's degree in fine arts.
He started his art career as a freelance illustrator working in advertising on campaigns for companies including TWA. His work appeared in magazines such as Cosmopolitan and on book covers for publishers, including Dell and Doubleday.
But at the age of 50, Mr. Daily redirected his career. The advertising industry experienced a financial downturn, so Mr. Daily decided to focus on children's literature. Much of his work was for Philadelphia's Running Press, which publishes classic children's books.
Mr. Daily's work was shown at many exhibits, including the annual New York Society of Illustrators show, a children's book illustration exhibit.
He taught for two years at the University of the Arts and was the author of his own version of The Twelve Days of Christmas that he called The Twelve Days of Christmas Cats. It featured feline characters in a book based on the familiar song. Mr. Daily was working on a new edition of Mother Goose when he died.
Mr. Daily had been married to artist Renee Quintal Daily since 1974. In addition to his wife, he is survived by son Joseph Q.; daughter Susanna Q.; and a brother.

Oh my. THE NUTCRACKER, THE VELVETEEN RABBIT, and THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS all in one volume. It's almost too much for adult and child, a treasure trove of fantastic colorful drawings, each expressing in picture the true meaning of the holidays. I can't even decide which were my favorite Daily illustrations...the enraged Mouse King, or the Rabbit, or the Dancing Pigs ("nine ladies dancing").
In my family, we celebrate Sint Nicholas Day on December 6th, which means oranges and chocolates show more and pastries and books. That's a good date to start reading this to your little one (or even to yourself) and treasuring the ability of an artist to bring text to life. It's really very magical.

The wonderful illustrations by Don Daily make this book a Christmas treat to enjoy. The lyrics to this familiar carol come alive with the beautifully drawn animal characters on every page. I especially love the clothes and headwear each wears.
I really liked this book. While reading it, it felt very nostalgic. My parents used to read me fables before bedtime when I was younger so it was nice to relive them as an adult. They have more meaning and underlying messages that I now realize, reading them 18-20 years later. I really like the structure of this book and how each chapter is a different fable. These fables are classic and memorable, as they have been adapted and retold in various forms. The illustrations in this book are very show more detailed and beautiful, it really helped visualize the story, even as an adult. The vivid pictures would make for a great read for children. This is a great resource for teaching children morals. The big idea/message of this book is to entertain, while also emphasizing moral concepts through fairytale. show less
It was awesome! says my 13 year old. A kitty variation of a familiar holiday tune. I don't think that I sang it very well, but I tried, and the kids all cheered and laughed at the frisky felines adorning each page. A convenient last page featuring one of each kitty also holds the complete carol for the ease of holiday singing around a tree or for relatives. My son enjoyed matching the cat to the lyric on this page. Excellent for any cat lover.
