This is a great guided reading book to use in a 1-2 grade classroom when teaching contractions, alliteration, and/or the consonant 'R'. I used this book in my 1st grade internship when teaching a guided reading lesson with a focus on contractions, to children who read slightly above grade level. This book was about a village who was preparing to meet their new king. They were doing multiple things throughout the book to prepare for the king to come. This book involved many patterns, sight show more words, and high frequency words, which made it fairly easy for the students to read. Although the children in the guided reading group could easily read the words within the book, they had a difficult time comprehending what they were reading, so many guidance and comprehension questions needed to be asked, making it a perfect book for their instructional reading level. show less
