2054 Religious History of Modern France Volume II: Under the Third Republic, by Adrien Dansette translated by John Dingle (read 12 Feb 1987) This volume was of greater interest than the first volume. It covers things I knew little of, e.g.,, Marc Sangnier and the Sillon. The chapter on the condemnation of Action Francaise was interesting but doesn't make the matter too clear. This book only goes to 1930. I would like to see a book covering the period since 1930. This work was well worth reading.
2053 Religious History of Modern France Volume I: From the Revolution to the Third Republic, by Adrien Dansette translated by John Dingle (read 7 Feb 1987) This volume I found actually too general. The author has a good attitude, but the history is sad in ways, although the recovery of the Church from the utter desolation it underwent in the Revolution is really remarkable. It is an easy book to read, but I should have read it in 1963.
