Lectures on the origin and growth of religion as illustrated by some points in the history of Indian Buddhism (The Hibbert lectures) by T. W. Rhys Davids
An example of High Victorian-think. I'd really like to know why the organizing idea of "progressive evolution" got such a hold on the 19th century mind. Seems like a worthy subject for investigation. After all, we still live with plenteous remnants of that paradigm. The author engages in some pretty serious mental gymnastics.
Dialogues of the Buddha: Digha-Nikaya PART 1 - Volume II (Sacred Books of the Buddhists) by T. W. Rhys Davids
A perfectly adequate translation of the long discourses. Good for orienting oneself in the dialog.
