Short biography
When she couldn't find a picture book to teach her daughters the words for emotions, Janan Cain created her own, "The Way I Feel." The Cain girls, then preschoolers, modelled for some of the pictures, which feature vivid colors and characters that appeal to both girls and boys. Mrs. Cain is available for school presentations that include a reading of "The Way I Feel" and a how-to-draw presentation. A how-to-draw teaching plan is also available free at www.ParentingPress.com/activities.html.

I really liked this book for a few reasons. First, I think this book is a good tool to use when trying to simplify more complex emotions. Things like jealousy or frustration can be hard for younger children to grasp. However, I think this is a great book for children even in pre-school. Second, I like that this book ends with saying that all of our emotions are different, but they're still "a part of me." I think that is a good way to validate the way children feel, which brings me to my show more final opinion. "The Way I Feel" both explains and validates that even the "unhappy" feelings are normal and acceptable using wonderful illustrations, a strong voice, and good examples to make each emotion more relatable to young children. show less
This book walks the reader through emotions that can be felt by a child on the daily basis. The illustrations offer a great example for young readers to associate their feelings with. Children need to understand that it is ok to feel what they feel no matter how many feelings they may go through.

This is a cute book which helps children identify their emotions. With colorful images that match the word connotating the emotion, I recommend this book to parents, especially those children who have a difficult time controlling their emotions. The simpliciting might help children laugh out loud at the image depicting the emotion, and therefore allow the child not feel ovewhelmed show more when they are angry, sad, silly, excited, jealous, proud, disappointed, scared, happy, thankful, shy, or bored. show less
This is a really good book. It is really good because it bring up emotions that people have every day and the author and illustrator both us exaggerated features to express words and pictures. In the book it says “Frustrated. I am frustrated because I can’t do it.” Many children say those words too often so it can be relatable to readers. The author uses large font sizes to represent the emotions. The illustrator uses different colors to represent different emotions. For Happy, the show more illustrator used bright colors such as yellow, green, and pink. For angry, the illustrator used vibrant colors such as red. The big idea of the book was that emotions will come and go and you will never know what is coming next but they are a part of you. show less
