This is a detail biography on one of Canada's major characters. Steele was involved in every military event in Canada's history from 1869 to 1919. He was part of the military force that went to the Red River Settlement to put down the rebellion led by Louis Riel. When it was found to be too ineffective and expensive to use the military to police the west, the Northwest Mounted Police were organized with Steele heavily involved. As an early Mountie, he tracked down rum runners and returned show more Sitting Bull to the USA.

When gold was discovered in the Klondike, he was there organizing the safe travels of the miners and policing the gold fields when the miners arrived. In 1899, Canada send a volunteer military force to South Africa to help England put down the Boer rebellion. Steele proved to be an excellent military organizer and tactician against the guerilla methods of the Boers.

He again served ably in the Great War despite the handicap of having Sam Hughes as his boss.

An amazing man and one of his times with the prejudices of those times.

Well researched with many pages of notes as proof.
