In My Life as a Screaming Skydiver, Wally McDoogle’s routine laser‑tag game spirals into international espionage—complete with rocket‑powered toilet paper, exploding dental floss, and transformer tacos. From the Swiss Alps to Africa, Wally stumbles through wild spy escapades as Agent 00 1/7th. Only when he takes responsibility—by parachuting out of a fighter jet hurtling at 1.2 gazillion miles per hour—does he manage to save himself... and the free world. A wacky, rapid‑fire show more comedy perfect for readers who love outrageous adventures. show less
Oh, Nick, I really feel ya in this story. Not that I'm an artist, not even close, but I definitely know what it's like to feel threatened by someone who comes along and seems to be better than you at something you felt was your strong point. Quite frankly, everything Nick feels here I have felt before, so this book hit me closer to home than most of the others in the series. The lesson Nick learns—to simply do your best and focus on using your talents and abilities in whatever way God has show more planned for you, rather than worry about comparing yourself to others—is a good one for everyone and even a good reminder for those who may have learned that in the past. Definitely one of my favorites in the series. McGee, Nick’s animated friend, isn’t as enjoyable on the page as he is on the screen, but I tend to just skim the all-animated sections now. These books may not be easy to find anymore, but if you do have the chance to read this book or procure it for an 8-10-year-old child, I recommend it. show less
This might be my favorite of this series so far, with the exception of the first one, which had a leg up with nostalgia. Like that first book, this one has a good emotional component, as Nick tries to stand up for a kid who is being bullied. Unfortunately, he has to learn that it takes a lot to shake people out of complacency (himself included). While he may not make all of the best choices and second-guesses his own responsibility in the situation, it's no surprise that, with some help from show more his wise parents, he makes the right decisions in the end. It's a good short story overall, though McGee, Nick's animated friend, isn't as enjoyable on the page as he is on the screen. These books may not be easy to find anymore, but if you do have the chance to read this book or procure it for an 8-10-year-old child, I recommend it. show less
I didn’t really know what to expect when I chose Invitation to read and review. Oh, I knew that the 4-novella collection was authored by some of the best authors in the field of Christian fiction, and that I have never been disappointed by anything they have written. I also knew that their writing style, characterization, and plot-development suited my reading tastes. But I didn’t know I would be led on a challenging and twisting journey that included mind-bending situations. Invitation show more is speculative fiction at its best. It has a unique format that suits the genre well — short, episodic novellas, changing points of view, and story lines which at first seem unrelated, but soon come together in a coherent manner. There is something weird going on, and this reader enjoyed every minute.

Each novella in the collection has a different author and the unique voice of one of the four main characters. Four very different people with strange gifts are brought together in what can only be called a supernatural way. And try as they might, they cannot keep from forming a team to investigate and somehow impact weird happenings. I loved how the authors’ collaboration brought forth a cohesive whole. This cannot possibly be easy to achieve, but they somehow managed to achieve unique stories within a consistent framework.

Evil seems to be having its way in Invitation, but there is a sense that God is at work in big ways in the world and in the lives of the main characters. I think the spiritual journey each character embarks on is my favorite part. As each challenge is met, the characters learn more about themselves and their place within a spiritual world. Each novella is wrapped up in Invitation, but the story is far from over. Invitation is just the first novella collection in this series.

Invitation is gritty and edgy; not your typical CF. So don’t be surprised if this book takes you places you didn’t expect with characters that don’t often show up in normal novels. You just need to do what I did — sit back and let the authors take you on a trip you won’t forget.

Recommended for fans of speculative fiction.

Audience: adults.
