When this book first arrived I couldn't remember why I had requested it and so let it sit while I finished other books I was reading. I finally picked it up 4 days ago - almost a full month after it arrived. I'm so glad I did.

This book was so heartfelt, introspective, honest, gripping, REAL......it's a sordid and tawdry tale about being human. Granted, this particular human is dysfunctional because he's an alcoholic - but just about everyone on the planet is dysfunctional in some way. We all show more make mistakes - we don't all learn from them as Kieran did.

This is a story that needed to be told outside an AA meeting. It's a story that needed to be told in exactly the way it was. I truly don't think I would have enjoyed the book anywhere near as much had the story been told differently. The fact that the author bared his soul - tarnished though it was - and put it all on display is what hooked me.

This is a book every young person should read (maybe required reading in high school?). It won't keep all of them from going down Kieran's road, but if it keeps just one it's worth it.

An easy reading, well written account of the Sea Venture- destined as a relief supply to the early Jamestown settlers in 1609. The author succinctly overviews the state of English affairs in the early 17th century, the crucial funding provided by The Virginia Company investors, and the important crew members including Thomas Gates, George Somers and Christopher Newport. The narrative covers not only the Sea Venture's harrowing voyage from England and the story of shipwreck and survival on show more remote Bermuda, but also decades following when members of the Sea Venture played a vital role in the survival and growth of Jamestown (and the Bermuda colony). Many notable figures from this interesting period are included, e.g., Powhatan, Captain John Smith, John Rolfe and Pocahontas. show less
I received this book for free from Member's Reviewers. I really liked this book. It was very interesting to read the decline of the author as he became an alcoholic. I've learned a lot about the disease reading about Kieran's ups and downs while drinking.

I found this to be a very interesting book. The author takes us through his life as an alcoholic. Even though this book is quite amusing you can see the pain and hurt that alcoholic's go through. We see his struggle to get past the alcohol. We learn that with determination, hope, love and encouragement from others we can be powerful enough to do anything. Great book
