Don't let the slow start stop you from reading this book - once it gains momentum, it doesn't slow down! The characters were great, I especially loved Maeve. I thought the world-building was good, and it's easy to imagine the story unfolding before your eyes like a movie. The action scenes are vividly described, and will definitely get your heart racing. An interesting sci-fi/fantasy story that holds promise for this new series.
One of the better fantasy books I've read lately. The characters are well rounded, you see actual character growth, and finding out who the main bad guy is? That was a twist I didn't see coming!

The magic system was unique; I can't recall seeing something like it before. I loved the world building, especially the glimpses we get of Alterra.

The fact that the hero of the story isn't a Mary Sue was quite refreshing; especially when she didn't even have any powers. And the fact that her foil show more wasn't arrogant? Almost unheard of!

My only complaint with the book was that we didn't get to see more of what happens in Alterra. Hopefully we'll get a book set there some day.

Terrific world, so unusual! Love it!
The Dead Beat, Volume 2
By: Aron Christensen, Erica Lindquist
Narrated by: Daniel Dorse
This is an Audioboom book I received free and the review is voluntary. I must be getting use to the husky voice of the narrator because it didn't bother me as much as book one.
This is a world where ghost and people can contract to have ghost possess bodies. A lot of thought went into this! All angles of what it would be like if it were real are represented. The illegal show more side, the contract side, who would and wouldn't be eligible, time restrictions, other restrictions that they bring up in book, and the cultist or religious groups trying to do illegal exorcisms.
This centers around two guys, partners, and their lives. One is a ghost inhabiting a body. The partners work to keep the ghosts and people in line! Thus the name of the book! I love this series!

Great paranormal story, very unique!
The Dead Beat, Volume 1
By: Aron Christensen, Erica Lindquist
Narrated by: Daniel Dorse
I really loved this unique idea and world! Ghost and people could make contracts so ghosts can possess bodies. Why? A number of reasons for both parties I never would have thought of. This is about a guy that is dead, hosted in a human but works with the cops special unit for those ghost that possess humans without permission. These are some of the cases and more about the show more two main guys. (The exorcist is done by a young man, a Father, and the dead guy is the detective. ) Love this story!
The narrator had a husky voice, on purpose, to give the story more feeling but I think it was over the top. The narration was okay.
This book was free to me and the review is voluntary. Thanks!
