As the ice front moves in the citizens move out leaving 7 firemen and a policeman to protect an empty town for the duration of the winter. Sounds like an easy gig and pays well too! That is until houses start burning down and dead bodies start turning up in a town that’s supposed to be empty. When the men find themselves floundering in a situation beyond their control will they band together in their need to survive or will the seclusion and elements tear them apart?

Explosions, gang wars, show more man-eating wildlife, a rogue cop, an insane mechanic and a fire station under siege. I really liked the idea of the story and following the camaraderie and dynamics of the men living in such confined quarters.
Final Response had plenty of action and suspense however I just couldn’t get into the first person narration. Jack wasn’t a very likeable person and didn’t particularly like the men he was working with. This made it hard for me to connect with the characters.
Some readers may not like the anti-climatic ending but I personally thought that it was realistic.

With my thanks to Bookkus Publishing for my copy to read and review.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Final Response takes place in a near future where the polar vortex has rendered Edmonton, Alberta unlivable during the winter. The only people who are supposed to be in the city are a group of fire fighters hired to ensure that the abandoned city doesn't burn down. Jack Sellars and his crew expect that weather and cabin fever will be their only real problems, but soon realize that there are people in the city who are not show more supposed to be there. With no help coming from outside the situation quickly spirals out of control.

The unusual setting and good characterization add extra interest to this fast paced thriller that kept me interested in what would happen next. My one real issue is that I would have preferred a more definitive ending.

Final Response by E R Yatscoff did something that most ARC books haven't. It kept me involved in the story. I would keep turning the pages to find out what happens next. It's been quite a while since a book has done that for me. It's action packed with mostly believable characters that were all individualized. I didn't have to muddle through trying to figure out which character was which. The only downside to this book were the number of word errors. It could have gone through a good editor show more one more time to clear up some of the wording. The end left a lot of questions, that I would have liked more resolution on, but a very entertaining book. show less

This book was far more interesting than I first thought it would be, the writing was well done, first person narrative, and moved along briskly. There was enough explanation of motive to make the character understandable and sympathetic. The tale, a futuristic Armageddon of natural causes believable with only a little suspension of reality. Clearly, the Canadian background of the Author and setting come through revealed by expression of attitudes in the story; and while some may find this show more disconcerting, it does not harm the plot. Others will, doubtlessly, reveal the entire plot or nearly so; consequently I will only recommend it highly for entertainment and not spoil the fun. A good book, with an exceptional conclusion. show less
