web editor - Short biography
- Mel Boring does not, in truth, live up to his name. He has been, variously, a one-room-school teacher, a junior high and high school steacher, and the editor of a children's literature Web site. His wife (a registered nurse) and his children, with their great enthusiasm serve as inspiration as he works on his books. Mr. Boring lives in Rockford, Iowa, with his family. A rather superficial book, with no index. However, it does have one cool thing - an activity to guide you calibrate the crickets in your area to a thermometer, to then be able to check the temperature outside without a thermometer.

Fairly narrow in focus to the suburban and rural areas of the Midwest and NE of the US, and SE Canada. Concise, for children, but I still learned a lot! A nuthatch may lay 10 eggs! Cardinals eat up to 100 different kinds of food! Includes introduction, needs no back matter.
A wonderful "first" field guide, this is great for children. The information is well written for children, the illustrations are good and it tells you how to find the insects as well as some of their habits, needs and the way they contribute to the environment.
nice nature guide with large life-like illustrations and a ruler on the back cover to measure discoveries on your nature hikes
