British novelist Lawrence Durrell's travelogue of the Greek Islands, is a finely written, scholarly account of his journeys that combines history, literature, mythology, and personal observation. Written in 1978, before the onslaught of tourists, Durrell provides a vivid portrait of 53 islands accompanied by beautiful and moving photographs. His essay on Crete was my favorite as it gave me ideas of off-the-beaten-path places to visit.
I recommend this book to anyone planning to visit Greece show more or interested in the islands.
