There's a lot going on here. At times an homage to X-men, Animal Man and Farscape, Dysart mixes it up in a delightful way to keep the characters fresh and the plot moving along. Animalia and Samurai Sue are just pure genius.
A lot of creative teams would take on something as ambitious as head-fake within a head-fake of Perfect Day's central conceit and struggle to bring it to fruition. This was pure genius though and I really hope we see way more of Animalia and more PoC characters in the show more book going forward. show less

This is more like it! I know Valiant was pushing X-O Manowar to be the new flagship title for the their relaunch, but I feel like Harbinger should have been the flagship book. There was just so much cool going on in this book!
I'm not sure how much of this story matched the original series, but this one was fantastic. The best way I can describe it is a mix of Akira and the movie Chronicle with a side helping of X-Men. Peter Stancheck, a harbinger who may be able to bring about a catastrophic show more future, is recruited by Toyo Harada to join his Harbinger Foundation and help not only gain control of his power, but also give Peter a place to belong. Soon, thought, Peter discovers that not everything at Harbinger is as it seems and that he has been manipulated. After escaping from Harbinger with the help of another harbinger, Peter knows he has to strike back against Harbinger.
Honestly, I really loved this book. In fact, I can't remember a graphic novel that I enjoyed as much as this. The story is great; the pacing is spot on; the art is fantastic. This is definitely a series that I will be following as future volumes are released! show less

Well, I feel like a big dummy for damning Richard Corben with faint praise, 'cause he's EXTREMELY good here on the title story, which is maybe the most disturbing Hellboy yarn to date. The Blackbeard side story is just okay, but the others - a brief FCBD entry that I don't want to say too much about and a really nice, eerie Mignola short about a mysterious painter - are really great, and it's a shame they're not as long as The Crooked Man.
The new Unknown Soldier series by Joshua Dysart is a recreation of the old series with not just a new twist, but an entirely different and more compelling backstory. The unknown soldier of the title is Lwanga Moses, a highly respected Ugandan doctor educated in the United States. He and his wife have returned to Northern Uganda to work with international aid organizations and to spread Moses's philosophy of nonviolent resistance against the brutality of both the Ugandan government and the show more Lord's Resistance Army, a guerilla rebel group of child soldiers. Working in the bush, faced with the worst of man's inhumanity, Moses begins hearing a forceful and violent voice in his head that calls him to action. Not knowing where these impulses come from, he must pit the pacifism he believes in against the Unknown Soldier, the fighting machine he is becoming against his will. This is an incredible series filled with believable moral dilemmas, complex characters, and enough geo-political intrigue for a fourth Bourne movie. I can't wait for the second volume of this comic - it's truly one of the best I've read in the past year. show less
