On my journey through novels that shaped my childhood, I recently revisited Janey's Girl by Gayle Friesen. I was absolutely shocked by how great of an impact it still has on me as a somewhat grown-up person. I can relate to this story more than words can convey.

When Claire and her mother, Jane, take a cross country road trip to visit Claire's long-lost grandmother, Jane's mother, everything is turned upside down. Claire is struck by the small town and the feeling that everyone knows more show more about her life than she does. There's romance, coming of age, family secrets and strange dynamics that Claire doesn't yet understand. But the main theme of this story is love, and all the things that means.

I remember hearing once that children become adults the first time they realize that they actually do know more, at least about some things in life, than their parents. That notion is the heart of this story, along with the fact that no matter how far you go, you can't run away from the people who love you. show less

Friesen has developed a rich cast of characters with wonderful interactions. Her dialogue is rich and sounds like authentic teenage dialogue. Humorous and touching and highly meaningful this well layered novel is well written and an enjoyable read.

A well-written first novel from Gayle Friesen that explores the uneasy relationship between a single mother and her daughter. The Canadian setting serves as a comfortable backdrop to the solid characterizations of Claire and her mother, Janey. The issue of teen pregnancy is also handled in a sensitive and caring manner, focusing on the impact on the lives of the main characters fifteen years later. Teenage girls will find this story compelling as they unravel family secrets along with show more Claire, and there is even a touch of romance woven into the mix as well.
