You either love Doane or you don't. I do, even if I don't agree with all of her analyses, but hers are, to me, worth considering.
The Desire to Desire: The Woman's Film of the 1940s (Theories of Representation and Difference) by Mary Anne Doane
Very worthwhile insights into that complex era for women's films. Hmm, cataloguing it makes me want to reread it. I think I will, after the 150 books on my goodreads to-read shelf.
