This is not a *bad* book, but it's far far less than it should be.

The basic problem is that it's a fourth edition; the world has changed immensely since the book was first written, but the book has not changed in parallel. So what we have is basically a guide to how to write c1997 HTML, with all its implicit junk of incompatible browsers and appearance-based markup, on top of which has been added a thin veneer of the new world of XML/XHTML and CSS.

What the world deserves is a decent book show more that *starts* with XML, semantic markup and CSS in the first chapters, proceeds to XHTML, and never once wastes our time telling us how to do things to work around a bug in some lame version of IE from 1999. show less
This book is easy to understand. It's a good place to start if you want to make a basic website.
The O'reilly guides are always the best--and i never could resist their covers--i need to get back into this one--actually need to brush up on my HTML even though so much is done for you NOWADAYS ;)
Basic html coding skills still carry me a long way. This remains helpful, even after all these years!
