Chambers English Dictionary by Sidney I. Landau
There may be a better english desk dictionary, but I haven't found it. If you can't benefit from the Chambers Cambridge English Dictionary, you haven't had enough education to beat off a swarm of attacking adverbs. This one is my personal standard against which I measure other desk dictionaries. Believe me, some are about as useful for serious use as a sieve is for drinking Guiness stout.
