This historical fiction book, "The American Flag" tells the history of how the flag came to be. The American flag was created in 1776 and has not changed much since then. The flag is the ultimate symbol of American freedom which represents people united by a common bond or cause.
I enjoyed this book because it reminded me of what a great country I live in. If you are not a patriotic person before reading this book you will become one after!
Classroom extension, this would make a great show more history lesson. We would discuss the flag and the importance of it. I would ask the children.....why the red, white and blue? Why stars and stripes? We would research this together and learn of the resemblance each color has. This lesson would carry over to the pledge of allegiance and why we even have it. This would be a 2 to 3 week lesson including our research time. show less
