Characterized by mis-shapen chair legs, vivid colours and strange combinations of materials, the work of Memphis - an international group founded in Milan in 1981 - upset every rule of functionalism and modern "good taste". united around Ettore Sottsass, the "intellectual counter-culture" the members of Memphis, young creative artists, architects, designers and graphic artists, put forward a new vision of furniture and objects fro everybody, composed of elements that were more emotional than show more functional, more artistic than commercial.
