This is a heart-warming book for anyone with a passion for nature appreciation. The young narrator and her father are on a canoeing camping trip together. As they are rowing through the sunset, the father teachers his daughter about loons. They spot many animals in the lake before they come across a whole family of loons.
The illustrations are vibrant and expressive, and the text is written in a poetic fashion. This is a great read-aloud book, but will be hard for beginning readers with show more limited vocabulary.
There is a great informational section about loons at the end of the story. show less

This book tells the story of a father and a daughter taking a camping trip across Loon Lake. During this trip the father explains the old Tsimshian story of the Loon’s magical powers. They eventually find a family of loons and watch as they gracefully swim across the water. Overall I thought this was an okay book, I feel it was interesting however not very exciting. I can tell this would be something a young student would get bored reading.
A girl and her father set out to find the loon. She attempts to make the right calls to find the bird and draw it to them.

A good story about an interesting type of bird, the Loon. The Loon is a very unique bird that dives underneath the water unlike the ducks. Ducks swim over the water only and not under. This book is for K-3 graders who are interested in learning about animals. The narrators are a father and a daughter who tell the students about the Loon and their way around the lake.
