I got this book for free from Ed Friedman and Library Thing in exchange for an honest review.
One of my grandfathers died before the internet was a thing and the other never really sent me emails besides the occasional dirty joke, but this book reminds me of a series of emails from a grumpy old, east coast grandfather. I can imagine him sending this out to people here and there and hearing that he should put them all together and make a book. I don't think that was the worst idea. This book show more also reminds me of when I used to read newspapers (remember those?) and there would be some column of observations written by an old white dude.
I Will Not Be Ignored is a collection of writings—nonfiction, short stories, rants about things Friedman doesn't like, mock advertisements, and other random musings. Some of them are amusing, some were confusing, and almost all of them were readable and not the worst ways to pass time. I didn't not enjoy reading the book, but it would probably would have been more fun to sit down with Ed and a beer and hear the stories come directly out of his mouth.
When a book really sucks it usually takes me a while to read. I don't have a desire to pick it up during moments of free time and, even if I do pick it up, I usually get so angry within the first couple pages that I have to put it down for at least a few hours. I read this book in a little less than 72 hours, so I must have enjoyed it on some level. So, yeah, I guess maybe read it. It's the not be best book I've read this year, but also far from the worst. show less
