When Grandpa's teeth - handmade by Swiss craftsmen, and very, very expensive - go missing, nothing that his family, police Officer Rate, or the townspeople do seems of much help in locating them. Even an appearance on the television show Unsolved Crimes fails to turn up any leads! Sadly, this nefarious crime soon has the entire town in an uproar, as citizens begin to lock their doors, suspect one another, and (worst of all) relentlessly smile, in order to demonstrate that their teeth are all show more their own. Those manically grinning faces are hard to maintain, and also start to scare the tourists away, and soon a town meeting must be called...

The solution to the crisis (and to the crime) are really quite amusing - children will get a kick out of the droll illustrations, and quirky storyline in Grandpa's Teeth. Missing teeth and suspicious smiles, oh no! The idea that smiling all the time is actually not such a good thing - something with which I agree wholeheartedly, as I think sometimes we get obsessed with a showy kind of 'niceness' these days, disregarding the need for genuine emotional expression - is very welcome, and flawlessly delivered in a story that will have kids giggling. I can just imagine a storyteller reading Grandpa's lisping lines, and getting quite a reaction from the audience! Recommended to anyone looking for humorous stories for younger children.

This book is about a girl named Amanda and her ordinary day. If you just listen to the story you hear about the things she does in her ordinary day such as: get up; get dressed; eat breakfast; get a ride to school from her old neighbor; etc. However if you look at the illustrations you will see that her day is anything but ordinary. A large man bangs on a gong to wake her, she straps on wings to literally fly down to breakfast and the old neighbor that takes her to school is a dinosaur. This show more book chronicles the (exciting) ordinary day in a child's life.

I liked this book. I read it to some children at an elementary school and their reaction to it made it even more enjoyable. It is interesting to hear the children's comments on the pictures of Amanda's ordinary day. In the scene where she is eating lunch in the cafeteria nearly every child had already picked out what they would choose to eat. I think it is an interesting example of how illustrations enhance the story.

You could use this book in a classroom to discuss the ordinary day a child has. You could have each child write about their ordinary day, and maybe even encourage them to come up with illustrations and see if any make the story different by using pictures. You could also use it to start discussing illustrations and how they can tell a different story.

One morning, a man wakes up and realizes that his teeth have been stolen. His family searches all over for the missing teeth and when they cannot find them, they call the police. The family hangs up wanted posters with a picture of the teeth all over town. Everyone in the town begins to smile at everyone they see to make sure that the teeth they have in their mouth really belong to them. Eventually, all the people in the town put a dollar or two into the collection plate at church to buy the show more man a new set of teeth. After he gets his new teeth, everyone in the town is much happier. This was a comical book about the search for lost teeth. show less
I had never heard of this book before and I'm very surprised because it was fantastic. It was fun to read because of the Grandpa's speech impediment due to his missing teeth. The turn of events that follow the family's initial panic is genuinely funny even to a jaded 20 year old.
