- Ed(ward) Dee spent 20 years on the NYPD walking the streets of the South Bronx before retiring as a lieutenant with a "suitcase full of stories" he had to write, including his four novels: 14 Peck Slip, Bronx Angel, Little Boy Blue and Nightbird. Ed was born in Yonkers, N.Y. Feb. 3, 1940. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School, then served two years in the U.S. Army. In 1962 he joined the NYPD and spent nine years in uniform in South Bronx precincts; the last 11 years of his career he supervised detectives in the Organized Crime Control Bureau. While working the streets he earned a BA from Fordham University.
Ed retired from the NYPD as a lieutenant. Then, answering a life-long desire to write, he left Fordham School of Law and earned a MFA in Creative Writing from Arizona State University.
His first novel, 14 Peck Slip, which was also his master's thesis, was named a Notable Book of The Year in 1994 by the New York Times. Bronx Angel ('95), Little Boy Blue ('97) and Nightbird ('99) followed.
His latest book, The Con Man's Daughter, was released in fall 2003. Order now
Ed has two daughters and four grandchildren. He lives in Delaware with his wife, Nancy.

A cop book written by a cop, retired NYPD detective Ed Dee.
Anthony Ryan is an NYPD detective investigating organized crime. His kids have moved out, his wife is ready to have him home more, and he's contemplating retirement, almost ready to give up the job that's "like having a front-row seat to the greatest show on earth."
Until he and his partner, Joe Gregory, find the body of a dead, formerly corrupt cop named Jinx Mulgrew after he's fished out of the river in a barrel, where he's been show more for a decade. That makes a lot of old-time cops nervous, because some of them, like Jinx, took money for looking the other way and worse. There's a possible organized crime connection to the murder. The more questions Ryan and Gregory ask the murkier and more dangerous it gets.
14 Peck Slip is a tour of lower Manhattan from a cop's perspective. It's filled with details of the life of the city and the lives of cops. There are no pure heroes, certainly not in the NYPD, but a few purely bad guys. And my copy is in the old paperback format, the kind that fits in your back pocket like a good cop story should. show less

This is a terrific read, with totally convincing settings, a twisty plot, and characters who are so real they cast shadows. Eddie Dunne is an NYPD cop who left the force after too many questions were raised during an IAB investigation, spent some lost years working for a Russian mobster and drinking too much, and is finally getting his life together in his hometown of Yonkers, just north of the Bronx.
The past comes back with a vengeance when his adult daughter is abducted, apparently by show more crooks surprised during a break-in, but Eddie knows his daughter's fate is tied up with his own past mistakes. He goes back to Brighton Beach to find out whether the Mafiya is behind the abduction. The NYPD and FBI get involved, hoping to use this kidnapping to score some points against the highly-organized crime being conducted by some highly scary people.
Eddie can play rough, too, and half the tension is in wondering how far he'll go, especially since his six-year-old granddaughter, who loves him unconditionally, stands to lose everything.
Dee handles this explosive material like a seasoned member of the bomb squad, never playing on the reader's emotions, cool and competent, leaving all the worry up to us. Apart from the author's ability to write about crime and law enforcement with utter confidence - Dee was a twenty-year veteran of the NYPD and knows his stuff - he gets the Brighton Beach setting totally right, even to contemporary Russian slang and a scene in M & I International, the best Russian deli this side of the Carpathians, that's so authentic it'll make you hungry. Highly recommended. show less
