No Surrender: A Father, a Son, and an Extraordinary Act of Heroism That Continues to Live on Today by Christopher Edmonds
“We all have the potential to change the world simply by standing up for what's right,” and after reading No Surrender, I truly believe that Roddy Edmonds embodied these words heart, mind, and soul.
What first struck me as I began to read No Surrender was the love that Chris clearly had for his father Roddy and the passion he had to find out the truth about his father and what he went through while being a POW during the Second World War. It’s clear this journey for knowledge was an show more act of love, and it’s also clear Chris knew this story would not only bring closure for himself but touch others with its impact, and in that, he was correct.
Reading about the author talk about his father in the first chapter was not only heartwarming but had me wishing I could’ve met this remarkable man. He sounded like he was the epitome of integrity and living what he believed, and I feel like we need more people like that in our world today.
While reading Roddy’s story, I could see these men in this camp. I could see the mistreatment, the malnourishment, and the overwhelming feeling of mystery and hopelessness. Wow...such incredible bravery! There’s one moment in particular where Roddy and his comrades had to literally face the monsters that held them captive that was positively chilling. I cannot imagine the fear that must've been coursing through his veins in that moment, but at the same time, I'm sure he also felt he had nothing to lose. All those men had left was one another, and they were all willing to die for one another. Such a powerful picture that I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that this actually happened.
I wish Mr. Edmonds wouldn’t have had to go through what he went through, but I am in awe that he was able to hold onto his faith and sense of self in the face of such adversity and strife. Reading his journey was incredibly touching and inspiring to me, and I will be forever grateful to all those who helped to bring his story to light.
*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own. show less
