Cherry Good

This is a short biography of John Muir. I didn't know much about him at all, so this book was a perfect introduction.

The cover has photots of the author in hiking kit, so a person might expect some personal narrative of hikes in John Muir country. I kept my eyes on the alert, but didn't find any of that. There a several descriptions of how to drive to this or that Muir site, with phone numbers, permits required, etc. So if you want to visit a site or hike a trail, there's info here that show more will get you on your way. Good does give some descriptions of what you might find, so she surely went and looked for herself, but she keeps herself well out of the story here.

I can't say for sure, but Good seems not to be from the USA. She describes the geography here in ways that only a foreigner could... I recall her telling us that Muir traveled through Milwaukee to get to Wisconsin. It doesn't happen enough to be a bother.

There's nothing here that gets very deep. It's a pretty quick read, and does touch on the full spectrum of Muir's life. show less
