Set In an Australian outback town, Jayden lives next door to Shannon and Nigel. Shannon's mother has gone to prison for killing her brutal stepfather and is about to be released from Jail. Nigel is dying of cancer. Jayden has a terrible stutter but is in love with Shannon. Shannon, Nigel and Jayden all like firing guns at targets and practice after school. As Jayden battles his own demons about his stuttering, along comes Pete a sociopath bent on destroying Shannon's mother and family to show more avenge the death of his father who was killed. In the mix are also drugs being sold around the town (Is Jayden's Dad involved) and lots of criminal activity. It all goes pear shaped at the homecoming party for Shannon's mother when Pete turns up announced.
Very gritty, violent story of outback, small-town life. Copious swearing and derogatory sex terms abound that make it for older readers. The author has, however, managed to portray the struggles of a student with a terrible stutter - the way they don't talk at all to cover themselves and how talking in class is an absolute nightmare. show less
