Disclaimer: I received this book as part of GoodReads' First Reads program

Erik Utne has had a very distinguished and interesting life. From acupuncturist to magazine publisher, he's covered a lot of ground and seen a lot of changes in the world. The name Utne means "far out" in Norwegian, apparently, which gives the book its title. But it also describes a very interesting life. Many people will be familiar with him through one of his publishing endeavors, "The Utne Reader", which is where I show more first heard of him. I had no knowledge of all the other things he's done in his life, the people he's met and the places he's been, so this book was edifying in that regard. And since we're from roughly the same generation, I found it especially interesting. If you want to learn about life growing up in the 1960s, life in the counterculture and the new age, definitely read this book. show less
