Swedish review

Ann Rosmans är en favoritförfattare och jag var överlycklig att få hem hennes senaste bok att läsa. Till skillnad från de föregående böckerna så utspelas till stor del handlingen på Orkneyöarna istället för i Marstrand. Men det var bara ett plus, för oavsett hur mycket jag tycker om att läsa om Marstrand så tycker jag att Rosman har gjort ett bra val att skriva om Orkneyöarna istället. Jag fick en känsla av att vara på Orkneyöarna när man läste boken och show more jag fängslade av både miljön och den spännande historiken och för att inte tala om mytologin som förknippas med Orkneyöarna.

En av orsakerna till att jag är så förtjust i Rosmans böcker är att hennes böcker alltid har en nutida och en dåtida historia som har kopplingar ihop. I detta fall så består den dåtida historien om dykexpedition som gjordes på 70-talet utanför Orkneyöarna medan i nutiden har Bo Stenman som var med på expeditionen försvunnit från sin båt som man har funnit drivande utanför Orkneyöarna.

Det var intressant att följa båda historierna, men jag måste erkänna att jag fann den nutida berättelsen lite bättre. Jag trodde att dykexpedition skulle vara mer spännande med tanke på historiken att HMS Hampshire gick under utanför Orkney öarna, men det var väldigt mycket om just dykning och inte så mycket spänning, även om det då och då hände intressanta saker.

Vågspel är en bra skriven bok, även om jag hade velat ha lite mer spänning i handlingen. Men den är läsvärd och miljöbeskrivningarna är underbara!

At the height of WWI, on the 5th of June 1916, the British warship HMS Hampshire goes down outside the Orkney Islands. With her she takes the British Minister of War, Lord Kitchener, and almost 700 men. But what else did she take with her? Rumours are rife, and tell about a vast, almost incomprehensible treasure.

Almost a hundred years later, a Swedish sailboat is found drifting with no-one on board, in the very same waters where the HMS Hampshire was lost. Bloodstains and signs of a struggle are evident on deck.

Karin Adler of the Gothenburg Police is called on to assist the local police in solving the case of the missing man, a Marstrand resident and professional deep-sea diver. During the investigation, a curious connection between the missing Swede and the long since shipwrecked HMS Hampshire is made, stemming from a disastrous diving expedition at the wreck site in the 1970’s. It’s clear that the case hinges on events that took place a long time ago, which resonate into present day.

Five crime novels in the Karin Adler series have been published to date, and Ann Rosman's works have been sold to eight countries. VÅGSPEL is the sixth novel in the series, and is set on the green and windswept Orkney Islands, a place where folklore is very much alive and secrets go deep. A place both of death and of fervent love.

Ann Rosman is a favorite author of mine and I was overjoyed to get her latest book. The stories in her Karin Adler series usually take place on Marstrand, Sweden, however in this book, most of the story takes place on the Orkney Islands. However, that was just a plus because no matter how much I enjoy reading about Marstrand do I think that writing about the Orkney Islands was an excellent choice. Rosman wrote in a way that made me almost feel like I was on the Orkney Islands and I was captivated both by the environment och the thrilling story and the interesting mythology that is associated with the Orkney Islands.

One of the reasons that I love reading Rosman's book is that her books always have a past and present stories that are connected. In this case, the past story is about a diving expedition during the 70s outside the Orkney Islands while the present story one of the divers Bo Stenman has disappeared from his bout that has been found drifting outside the Orkney Islands.

It was interesting to follow both stories, but I must admit that I liked the present story a bit more. I thought that the diving expedition would be more interesting to read about because of all the history associated with HMS Hampshire. However, it was just not always that thrilling to read about the diving. Fortunately, now and then interesting things happened.

Vågspel is a well-written book and despite the fact that I wanted som more action is the story was worth reading and the environment descriptions of Orkney Islands are lovely.

En grupp med pensionärer åker ut till Klöverön för att göra en utflykt. De möter på en kvinna som håller på och gör provtagningar på en mosse. Hon visar gruppen hur man gör ett prov och när det kommer upp igen har det ett människoröra med sig. Polisen från Göteborg kopplas in och Karin Adler får åka ut till platsen. Man gräver upp mossen och finner en kvinna med ett spädbarn i sina armar. Kvinnan har bragts om livet med ett hårt slag i huvudet. Hur länge har hon legat show more i mossen? Vem har dödat henne?

Boken spänner sig över Marsstrands historia från nutid tillbaka till för 250 år sedan då det fanns något som kallades kaparbrev. Detta innebar att en del av fiskarna ute vid Marsstrand hade rätt att från kungens sida agera som pirater men inte mot båtar som t.ex. kom från Holland. Detta efterlevdes inte och många familjer levde nog med undran var deras anhöriga förlist någonstans på sin väg till Sverige.

I bokens historiska del får läsaren följa en ung kvinna som mot sin vilja ska giftas bort med en man som hennes far har utsett. Hon vill inte detta och väljer att rymma hemifrån förklädd till pojke. Väl på Marsstrand blandas hon snabbt in i kapaerverksamhetens mörkare sidor. Kommer hon avslöjas som kvinna och vad blir då straffet? show less

This book like all the books before by Ann Rosman takes place in Marstrand, Sweden. And like all the other books before by her is this story also divided between the past and the present.

Marstrand 1906
A young girl, Karolina arrives at the spa town to get healthy and also to find a husband (since it is the purpose of women of the time). She quickly finds herself two suitors and now the struggle for her hand can begin.

An old man gets killed in an abandoned hotel and Karin Adler show more has to figure out who killed him and why?

It felt more like reading two books instead of one, of course, there is a point with the past story, it has a link to the present story, but when I read the part that linked the history to the present I just felt a little bit let down. Is that it? I must say I prefer her past books when it comes to writing about the past. And also the whole must find a husband for the daughter is a theme I just loathe. Although the father in this story, at least, was nice enough to not force her into something she didn’t want.

Rosman skriver bra som vanligt. Det är fina miljöskildringar och bra och trovärdiga karaktärer. Själva intrigen i denna bok berör mig inte och jag saknar den spänning som en "spänningsroman" bör ha så det blev ändå en liten besvikelse.
