When I was a little girl I remember reading many of the Golden Book series and The Poky Little Puppy was probably one of my most favourite books in the series, so when I discovered this book I was absolutely ecstatic to discover it.

This book was a sweet little story featuring The Poky Little Puppy demonstrating the real spirit of Christmas. We see the cheeky antics of The Poky Little Puppy in that he was easily distracted by things going on around him and then lagging behind the rest of the show more group because of it. The distraction for Poky this time was a little skunk, called Herman, who was the victim of humans cutting down a Christmas tree which fell onto Herman’s home, a hollow log. Poky found an old rubber boot which he gave to Herman as an alternative home to his now smashed log.

This is a wonderful story for everybody, old and young alike.

A silly little book about 5 siblings and 1 of the is always behind the rest of the crew, but he seems to enjoy the slow life. Ms was obsessed with this book for a bit. Mx liked it, but not to the same degree.
"The Poky Little Puppy's Counting Book" is a beginning reader's counting book. The book is structured as a board book that has been cut in a rounded shape around the puppy's profile. The smooth curving shape of the book is followed by the soft chalk like colors in the illustrations. Each page contains an Arabic number from 1 to 10 with a like number of a variety of animals to match the number. The cardinal number is included in the description of what the animals are doing on each page.

I show more feel the book is very appropriate for a source of introducing counting to a child. The size and shape of the book are welcoming in its curved shapes and soft colors. The animals used to demonstrate the number are all animals that would be familiar to an early reader.

In the classroom the children could be encouraged to find other objects to place in groups to match a number. Since the book is about animals and outdoor activities, the teacher could arrange a field trip into a local yard or play ground to see how many different items could be “counted”.

This is a mildly cute Christmas-themed Little Golden Book. I confess I haven't read The Poky Little Puppy, but since it's a classic, I was expecting to really like the illustrations at least. Instead, they're just servicable in this story about the poky little puppy befriending a skunk who has lost his home. I guess the author and illustrator are different here from the original. The message of the story, that the best presents are the ones you give, is pretty trite, but originality isn't show more something you generally expect from Christmas books~! This would be an adequate bedtime story during the Christmas season. show less
