children's story writer - Short biography
- Britt G. Hallqvist, née Nyman, was born in Umeå and grew up in Visby, Sweden. She earned a master's degree in philosophy and made her literary debut with the publication of Rappens på Blåsopp in 1950. She wrote rhymes and jingles, fairy tales, and stories for children and books for adults, but her reputation has mainly been based on her translations of adult and children's classic literature. Translated works included Faust, Hamlet, and Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, as well as a number of opera libretti. She also rendered English and German religious poetry into Swedish. In 1939, she married Sten Hallqvist, a clergyman and teacher, with whom she had four children.

I do not even remember how I came to read this book since it is Swedish and at the time, there was no internet or amazon or anywhere to order this. Anyway..
It was a favorite of mine as a child. Betinna is a child in the hospital for many weeks. She is unhappy and impatient to be back at home.
Soon Bettina begins getting night visits from a lovely and mysterious woman who entertains her with gifts and stories and her soothing words. But who is this lady and where did she come from?
There are show more some children's books that should never ever be forgotten and this is one of the. It was such a wonderful and enriching book which I read over and over again and never forgot. I have never liked hospitals either nor stories about them but this book somehow makes everything beautiful.
Five stars. A great book for either yourself or your children. show less
