I was intrigued by the title so I picked this one up. However, upon starting the book I was less than thrilled. I would call this a "stand-alone," but the main characters seemed to be ones you should already know something about prior (apparently this is book 2 in a Jim Evans series). As the book progresses, we get some of the blanks filled in, but there's a John Smith, and a Max Davas, and I'm sure some others who are mysteries, essential to some backstory, but we never get any real show more character development; they just pop up into and out of the story.
The beginning seemed a bit rambly, and I found it generally bad, I was struggling to keep up much interest. There was a lot of geopolitics and economics presented, and that was good and all well laid out; a big part of the big picture. About halfway through the book, things finally got rolling. It was a all a bit weird ranging from back of beyond to the future of warfare; including the American Way of taking out anyone and everyone in the way, collateral damage be damned.
The main character Jim Evans, who I should have known more about at the beginning, is some kind of savant as well as an all around likeable and good guy. I liked him. I didn't quite care for his lady love Jane Brown, I guess she was supposed to be kind of a G.I. Joe crossed with Wonder Woman. The other character with good value was Pierre (aka Man Bites Dog / Dog Bites Man). Stafford too, but he is one of the mystery players. And, of course, the Pygmies. show less
