The Company of Birds is a lovingly crafted epic fantasy which I thoroughly enjoyed. The protagonist, Liese is a wonderfully flawed character who draws a tremendous deal of empathy. While all the characters are well drawn, it’s Liese who drives the story and is the most fully rounded.

The world building in this story is beautiful and I found myself getting lost in it. This dominates the first half of the book and while that effected the pacing, the imagery created was worth it. There are show more many strong themes which are planted at the beginning which pay off in the climax.

I received a free review copy of book in return for an honest review. And I’m very interested in reading more from this author.

Lizzie, or Nefretkheperi, is an inkarna, a person whose spirit can knowingly return from the dead to inhabit another body. Dying in 1966, she is meant to return in 2007 to take over the body of three-year-old Catherine van Vuuren. Instead she finds herself waking to life in the body of Ashton Kennedy, five years later. Kennedy is not a very nice fellow. Elizabeth finds that he has a lot of enemies and a steady girlfriend. She also finds that the South Africa she left behind has changed a show more lot. She handles the changes almost too well, which is a weakness in the novel. She also finds that there are intrigues that she has to handle and occult war that she has to fight, both with the shade that she has displaced, and with a rival occult house. In the process she also has to deal with past love and rivalry and present love.

It's a well-told tale, by a novelist whose skill is developing, and who manages here to straddle dark fantasy and romance with real ease.

I wrote this novel a good few years ago after a little old lady accosted me in the street, pretty much the same way Jamie gets his goat up at the start of the novel. That's pretty much the "A-Ha" moment that birthed Khepera Rising. Once again, I'll say who this novel will appeal to: lovers of dark and urban fantasy, and folks who have a fascination with the occult and supernatural. Primarily, this is a story about revenge, but also touches on concepts of what's good and what's evil. When I show more started writing this novel, I asked myself: What happens when the bad guy is the good guy. The rest, well, it's a mad-capped romp through Cape Town's underbelly. show less
It’s the scene Crooked Fang fans crave. Vamp, Xan Marcelles, meets his match in a witty dance of dialogue with erotic author, Therése. The story switches back and forth between the two in a sultry give and take building to a climax that gives the title its name’s sake. For the price of only intoxicating your senses, Carrie Clevenger and Nerine Dorman deliver one hell of a story.
