- With the economy the way it is, I think it's more important than ever that readers aren't misled by a hard sell from authors, so I like to share my personal mission statement.
My goal as an author is to give good value. I expect to provide my readers with six to eight hours of amusement, a couple of really good laughs, a romantic frisson or two from the sensual scenes, a thoroughly satisfying Happy-Ever-After, something to think –or talk--about when the book is finished.
The paperback books in my "god-Princes of Tigron" series are
#1. Forced Mate ISBN 978-0-505-52601-4
#2. Insufficient Mating Material, ISBN 978-0-505-52711-0
Recent winner of the 2008 Hollywood Book Festival's Romance category
#3. KNIGHT’S FORK ISBN 978-0-505-52740-0
Recent winner of the pnr reviewers' "Top Pick for September 2008", and of a LASR "Readers' Choice Book of the Week"
All my titles are chess puns.
Rowena Cherry has played chess with a Grand Master and former President of the World Chess Federation (hence the chess-pun titles of her alien romances).
She has spent folly filled summers in a Spanish castle; dined on a sheikh's yacht with royalty; been seranaded (on a birthday) by a rockstar and an English nobleman; ridden in a pace car at the 1993 Indy 500; received the gold level of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award; and generally lived on the edge of the sort of life that inspires her romances about high-living alien gods.

"Insufficient Mating Material"
by

Let me state right now for the record, I don't read romance stories. I dislike
them intensely. Imagine my surprise when I finished reading Rowena Cherry's
romance novel, "Insufficient Mating Material" in two days. I'm just sorry it
ended. This is a romance story told with true grit. John Wayne would've loved
being featured in this book. It's his kind of romance story from being marooned
on a charted=2 0desert i sle to taming of the shrew. Not show more everyone could've carried
off this slight of hand, but there's one thing I've learned about Rowena. She's
a professional. When she writes romance, she puts her heart, soul, and chess
knowledge into it. Hundreds of years ago, chess was created so that people
would fight war with their wits, instead of by force. Ms. Cherry continues
using this strategy in writing "Insufficient Mating Material." Her hero and
heroine pit wits against a protagonist that just as versatile and deadly as they
are. Run, don't20walk to the nearest bookstore, and buy a copy of this truly
awesome book. I know that whenever Rowena chooses to cont inue this series, I'll
be waiting in line with the rest of her fans to snatch and glorify a copy of her
immense chess wit, romantic interludes and shinnigans with a royal family that
just doesn't quit when their world turns upside down and topsy turvey. Five
romantic thumbs up!

When I began FORCED MATE, I knew it was both a futuristic romance and a spoof of the romance genre. Still, I was unprepared for the cheesy characters and motivations Rowena Cherry included. She had me in stitches, although I felt the parody might be over-the-top. Then the novel hit its stride. Political intrigue, culture clashes, gender issues, and romance collide to create a fun and breezy story that made one think just a little.
The main couple consists of Prince Tarrant-Arragon, a devious show more teddy bear who pretends to be as ruthless and tyrannical as the rest of his family, and Djinni-vera, the last virgin of his race. He kidnaps her, interrupting several of his enemies' plots. Cherry does not skirt the issue of rape. The women in the novels who have suffered rape are strongly affected by the event. But "Tigger" (as Djinni dubs him) goes to great lengths to earn his intended's permission.
Meanwhile, his enemies run amok. The mixture of slapstick and intrigue works to great effect. show less

How do I describe “Knight’s Fork” by Rowena Cherry? This book is a conglomeration of science fiction, romance, comedy (I think), and action/suspense? To be quite frank, most of it didn’t really make sense to me. I felt like I had been dropped into the middle of a story without any cliff notes or background! I read the first book in this series but not the second and maybe that’s why I had such a hard time. In any event, I don’t show more think I could recommend this one as a stand-alone read.
Electra is a Djinn female, an Imperial Princess, and a barbarian Queen. She was mated to a prince of Volnoth as a living peace treaty. Now her husband is the King of Volnoth but he apparently cannot impregnate a Djinni. Since Electra cares for her husband, she is desperate to find a way to give him a male heir before he loses the throne. When she spots a Djinn with the correct colored eyes, she decides to ask him for some sperm. Havoc and mayhem ensue as Electra and her intended donor Djinn, ‘Rhett, become the targets of political maneuvering by three different royal houses!
‘Rhett is a Djinn, a Saurian Knight, and the son of the most powerful ruler of the free worlds. He’s also apparently made a vow to save his virginity for his mate. He spent a good amount of time on Earth and trained as a lawyer and LIVES for rules and order. So when Electra, a mated Queen, appears to be asking him to sleep with her, he’s far from flattered, even if she is gorgeous. By trickery and deceit on the part of I lost count of how many players, Electra is smuggled onto ‘Rhett’s ship which is on its way to Earth. By the time he finds her, it’s too late to send her back in time for her to make her Royal Mating ceremony. At first, ‘Rhett is suspicious of Electra but soon they become friends. It will take all ‘Rhett’s abilities as a lawyer and a knight to save Electra and have a happily ever after.
With a hero who seemed to love playing the passive aggressive jerk and a heroine who (?unintentionally?) spent her time being a prick tease, I ended up not particularly liking either of them. Even giving ‘Rhett points for his determination not to sleep with a mated Queen and giving Electra points for wanting to help her husband via a spermcicle (no, really. You’d have to read it to believe it.), it seemed these two were happiest being miserable. Add in the myriad subplots on the part of just about everyone else in the book and it was exhausting.
For the most part, I felt a lot like Electra…lost in a new culture and misunderstanding everything around her. her world as I was in this book, “Knight’s Fork” was an effort to finish. Every time I thought I had at least gotten a glimmer of the plot of “Knight’s Fork”, either a new character or a new twist came in to blow my understanding to smithereens! And at 340 pages, that’s a long time to spend being confused. So if you have read Rowena Cherry’s previous books in this series and liked them, you will probably like this one too. It just wasn’t for me. show less

Tarrant-Arragon is known as a tyrant, ruling his people with a bad temper and propensity for violence. This suits him fine for fear of his reputation is handy for averting many potentially bloody, deadly situations. Unfortunately that same reputation gets him into trouble when he kidnaps and falls in love with the willful, Saurian Knight and half-djinn, Dijinni. Dijinni is all he can think of and at first his lies about his true identity don't bother him. But, the closer they get the more he show more realizes what he wants is a willing queen, not a Forced Mate.
Aliens, in-breeding, chess refrences and more sexual innuendo than I think I've ever read in one book before make this a very unique story. At first the large host of characters and variety of names confused me but as the story went along I was better able to figure out who everyone was and what their part in the complex plot of secrets, lies and betrayal included. I can honestly say I've never read anything quite like this before. If you enjoy science fiction and don't mind a healthy dose of varied euphemisms for various body parts and sex I'd suggest checking this book out. show less
