Bernard Cottret (1951–2020)

Cottret refers to this work, which first appeared in French in 1995 and is here published for the first time in English, as "a history of faith" and concludes that "the history of a particular man is also a history of the hope he entertained as much as a history of what actually happened." That this is a history of Calvin's hope as much as a description of what "actually happened" in Calvin's life helps explain the careful attention to political developments in Switzerland and France that show more characterizes the book. It is as much a history of ideas that pivots on the religious controversies of the sixteenth century as a traditional biography. Readers will encounter Calvin in that pivot point, more at the edge of the eye than face-to-face. As Cottret notes, this is a fitting contrast to the full-bodied, earthy, and personal portraits of Luther that emerge from the same period. We meet Calvin in the institutions he shaped-not as a figure with whom we might enjoy a drink at the corner bar but as an architect behind the scenes of an edifice that casts a shadow across the more than four centuries that separate us from the man. show less

De historicus Bernard Cottret tekent Calvijn in deze boeiende biografie als de bescheiden man met een ijzeren wil, die aan de wieg stond van een nieuw type mens. Hij geeft een scherp beeld van de reformator tegen de kerkelijke, filosofische en culturele achtergrond van zijn tijd. De hervormer wordt overtuigend neergezet als een bewaarder van het zuivere geloof, die even heftig de grootste openheid als de hardste intolerantie in praktijk brengt.

Een evenwichtige biografie over de show more kerkhervormer Calvijn (1509-1564) ontbrak nog steeds. Veel publicaties worden geschreven door aanhangers van het calvinisme en zijn daardoor bepaald eenzijdig in hun tekening van Calvijn. Maar ook tegenstanders van het calvinisme laten zich niet onbetuigd. Zij hebben vaak geen goed woord voor hem over. De historicus W.J. Bouwsma deed in zijn boek 'John Calvin. A Sixteenth Century Portrait' (1988) een poging de veelzijdigheid van Calvijn weer te geven. Maar de imponerende persoonlijkheid van Calvijn vergde een grondiger beschrijving. In deze lacune heeft de Franse historicus Cottret voorzien. Het boek is boeiend geschreven. Met behulp van treffende citaten geeft de auteur weer hoe Calvijn de ingrijpende omslag in het Europa van de zestiende eeuw beleefde en beinvloedde. Recht gedaan wordt aan de veelzijdigheid van de reformator van Geneve die zich in zo'n sterke mate wegcijferde dat hij niet wilde dat men zou weten waar hij begraven werd, maar tegelijk zo autoritair kon optreden dat zelfs zijn medestanders beducht voor hem waren. J'ai été assez déçu à la première lecture de ce livre par sa tendance à vouloir empiler les événements plutôt que de leur donner du sens, particulièrement à partir du XVIIIème siècle.

Mais la seconde lecture (précédée d'une lecture de deux histoires de France, une histoire de la Grande-Bretagne et une histoire de show more l'Ecosse) m'a fait apparaître toute la profondeur de ce livre, effectivement très érudit. Chaque phrase (chaque mot ?) semble faire référence à une histoire, une anecdote, un livre ou une chanson, dont l'explicitation aurait rendue ce livre très indigeste. Et sa grande force réside dans le savant mélange de l'histoire factuelle de cette grande nation et des commentaires de l'auteur, parfois admiratifs, parfois circonspects, toujours pertinents.

Cette histoire de l'Angleterre est une lecture agréable et intéressante, pour les initiés. show less

J'ai plus survolé que lu ce livre qui est pourtant très riche en informations, trop riche pour quelqu'un comme moi qui ne connaît pas du tout le sujet. Il m'a pourtant intéressé et même si je n'en retiens pas beaucoup de choses, il m'a permis de mettre un peu de lien entre les notions éparses que j'ai sur l'histoire de l'Angleterre. Il m'a aussi fait découvrir des périodes dont j'ignorais tout. En fait, je crois que c'est le livre qu'il faudrait avoir chez soi pour s'y reporter lors show more de la lecture de livres plus détaillés portant sur un personnage ou une période précise de l'histoire de l'Angleterre afin de les réinsérés dans un contexte plus global. show less
