Ahoy me hearties! Do you love a pirate story? Then this is a fabulous book for you! It is extremely well written (paperback 160 pages) and includes a wealth of impressive illustrations. Your kids will find this book entertaining, engaging and most amusing. There are some great characters in this story. Matilda is just adorable. Don't be surprised if your kids' are glued to this story - there is an element of "What happens next?" about every chapter. I would suggest that this book is perfect show more for early readers, of five years and over. However, I'm sure that younger children will be delighted to have this story read to them, with the help of the page by page illustrations. I can fully recommend this book. show less
This book was a free book for Early Reviewers. It was a quick and easy read! I was not acquainted with this hilarious series until I read this book. Kids enamored with pirates would definitely enjoy this adventure of a little girl who is best friends with pirates, who come to the rescue of the town Dull-on-Sea. I like the "turning the tables" theme, in which kids help save the town and defeat the wicked and ghostly pirates. I also loved the idea of pirate parents and kids, just like a normal show more family--but they happen to be pirates! The illustrations were cartoon-like and funny. Some younger kids might find the bad pirates frightening, but overall I liked this book. show less

In the Jolley-Rogers and the Ghostly Galleon by Jonny Duddle we meet/are re-introduced to Matilda a young girl who lives in a place called Dull-on-Sea. Her lovely home is plagued by a crew of pirates who are stealing everything they can from the village. Matilda calls on her old friend Jim Lad and her family who are pirates who live on the Jolley-Rogers to help her solve her problems.
The book has an interesting plot line, some readers may be confused by the lack of back story between Matilda show more and Jim Lad and how they know each other. The illustrations are fantastic and as the author is also the illustrator it is a true representation of the characters that he is creating and building on.
The series originally started out as a couple of picture books but this is an early to middle chapter book, I'd recommend it for grades 2 and up. show less
