A fun read. A collection of historical conundrums given, supposedly casting doubt on modern notions of superiority.
Re-read 2025
I read this at age twenty and thought it interesting. One of those post Von Däniken books in the late 1960s and early 1970s that were so popular in its day. Historical conundrums? Space aliens? Ancient advanced civilizations? What struck me now as a forty-five-year-old is how terrible it is. Poor reasoning, poor sourcing, and terrible logic. Some neat things, but show more mostly utter crap. And, what struck me more in 2025, is the constant reference by an Aussie to books and journals published in Communist China and the Soviet Union. Never paragons of actual science they. But then crazy when read in conjunction with chapter 18, a paean to the (supposed) socialistic-communism of the Incas. Utter tripe on a historical level and utter tripe on a philosophical level. I keep it maybe because it was the only book I ever bought (myself) at Keep On Booking on Rancier in Killeen, Texas, in the late 1990s: one of those bygone bookstores of the twentieth century. show less
